SAPPORO, August 5 – The rogue whaling nation of Japan slaughtered its first Pacific 25m(82ft)-long endangered fin whale.
In the midst of the accelerating climate and extinction crises, it’s appalling that Japan would flaunt international law and disdainfully murder defenceless mammals.
Japan intends on slaying another 58 fins using their new $48 million whaling mother ship, Kangei Maru, before the year’s end.
Not only is there no need nor demand in the Nippon nation for whale meat, the whalers are funded in total by the government, a crown Japanese corporation. That entity loses many millions of dollars annually. It’s yet another deadly subsidised ransacking of our wounded world.
This was the first fin whale to be harpooned in 50 years. Japan has sunk to an all-time low by torturing more magnificent sentient Majesties. Why? It’s sadistic cruelty. Unpardonable.
All cetaceans (whales, dolphins, porpoises) have a vital role as biogeochemical farmers of the sea helping to regrow the missing 40 per cent of phytoplankton. Phytoplankton along with Prochlorococcus (bacteria) gives us almost three out of every four breaths of oxygen.
A smart seven-year-old can grasp the urgency of replenishing oxygen and defending the whales that are rebuilding the ocean’s phytoplankton. The Japanese government is horrifyingly focused on plundering the sea rather than saving earthly life.
Meanwhile, global environmental hero and lifelong whale defender, Captain Paul Watson, remains interned in one of the world’s most remote prisons, Nuuk, Greenland, awaiting a decision by Denmark’s Ministry of Justice on Japan’s extradition request.
SHAME on Japan. From this point on, refuse to support Japanese goods, services or tourism until Japan STOPS all brutality and slavery against our brothers and sisters, the cetaceans.
Agitate. Disrupt. Defend.
